D-GOMM

Frank was the ultimate mix of a perfectionist and a maverick. Who else would ask you to fold the seatbelts again on your seats when leaving his plane. And who else would use a vacuum cleaner to remove the many bugs, attracted by the light on the patio wall, when having a braai in the evening.
He was a great story teller and we have fond memories of his enthousiasm and his zest for life. He was one of the friendliest and most hospitable persons on Erinvale and his laughter will be sorely missed.

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous, but it is terribly unforgiving is certain circumstances. Frank knew this but chose to live his life and to enjoy it to the best of his ability to do so. That is how we came to know Frank and that is how we will remember him forever.

We will have a glass of wine to his memory and will always recall that smile.

Dear Dorise,
Please forgive the delay in my writing but I simply did not know what to say as I cannot imagine how you must be feeling.

I remember Frank so well and especially the good advice he gave me regarding my dental needs!!He was so kind and understanding.
I found a poem that I enclose - it is rather beautiful.

You can shed tears that he is gone
Or you can smile because he has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow because of yesterday

You can remember him and only that he's gone

We remember Frank with much affection. He was a regular supporter of the B.M.P.A meetings together with his lovely family.We have had great pleasure following their achievements over the years.We always enjoyed hearing about Frank's flying adventures around the world.He will be fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. We hope to meet the family again sometime, probably in Cape Town.

Homeward Bound

A ship is preparing to ship out to sea on the ebb tide.
We watch as she sails away
and gradually sinks below the horizon.
"She is gone"
But even as we sigh and turn away...
There is a glad cry from the further shore
"Here she comes"
Under full sail, triumphantly, carrying the treasures of a lifetime.
She glides into harbour under the joyous welcome of those loved ones
"who have gone before us"

Death is but the return to the beautiful home which we left at birth!

Liebe Bianca,

in letzter Zeit habe ich häufiger an dich denken müssen und habe mich gefragt, wie es dir wohl so in Amerika geht und ob du irgendwann wieder zurück nach Deutschland kommst.

Einige Tage später, als Alexander und ich beim Putzen, genauer „Staubsaugen“, unserer Wohnung waren, habe ich ihm von meinem Besuch bei euch in Kleve erzählt (die Geschichte mit den Känguruhs kannte er natürlich schon!) und davon, dass wir bei euch auch Staub gesaugt haben. Ich habe damals nach dem Saugen wieder das Kabel einziehen lassen und dabei das Kabel festgehalten, damit es nicht so wild herumschlägt beim automatischen Einwickeln. Dies hat deinen Vater sehr beeindruckt, weil doch die meisten immer einfach nur auf den „Einziehknopf“ drücken und das Kabel dann wild umherschlägt! Ich glaub, wir waren in dem Vorraum zu euerm Haus (dort wo noch der Mäuseschwanz aus der Decke ragte!). Immer wieder erzähle ich auch gern, dass die Familie Hettlich am Wochenende im Schlafanzug frühstückt und ich das zuerst für einen Scherz gehalten habe… (nicht zu vergessen, dass du mich mit einem nervtötenden Muezzin-Wecker geweckt hast und lachend vor meiner Tür auf dem Boden saßt!).

Neulich war mir dann im Büro mal wieder langweilig und ich habe (verbotenerweise!) “bianca hettlich“ gegoogelt. Da erschien dann zuerst ein sehr beindruckender Lebenslauf von dir und dann die Seite www.d-gomm.de....

Liebe Bianca, ich bin so erschüttert über den Unfall deines Vaters und versichere dir, dass ich ganz fest an dich und deine liebe Familie denke! Wenn ich auch nur kurze Eindrücke von deinem Vater sammeln konnte, waren es doch nicht minder Beeindruckende! Eure Internet-Seite hat mich sehr berührt, ihr seid eine tolle Familie und die vielen lieben Einträge können einen wenn auch nicht wirklich über den schweren Verlust hinwegtrösten so euch doch Gewissheit schenken, dass ihr nicht allein mir euer Trauer seid. Berührt hat es mich auch deswegen, weil auch mein Alexander für sein Leben gern fliegt und wir nun jedes Wochenende (nur) mit dem Simulator unterwegs sind.

Ich sende dir und deiner Familie herzliche Grüße, auch von Alexander, und wenn es dich mal wieder in den Süden Deutschlands verschlägt, zögere nicht, dich zu melden,

Dear Dorise and family

A year ago, almost to today, we were soaring high
over the Cape with Frank. It was wonderful!
He was so gentle and caringly informative, making sure that we understood all that he was doing and insuring that we flew over every point of interest on our journey - over Erinvale, out to Hangklip, over False Bay, to Cape Point and up the Peninsular, over the Waterfront and Table Mountain before returning along the coast and False Bay and inland to Stellenbosch. It was an hour that passed all too quickly and one we will never forget. His enthusiasm to share his love of flying with us will always be a lasting memory of a very special person. Our love and sympathy to you all.

Und immer sind irgendwo Spuren seines Lebens,
Gedanken, Bilder, Augenblicke und Gefühle.
Sie werden mich immer an ihn erinnern

A LETTER TO PASS OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCESS FOR THE PASSING AWAY OF OUR BROTHER , Dr FRANK

We wish to show our sympathy about the passing away of our brother Dr Frank. We remember the work that he did for our school, Now we have a school hall & classes because of him and his family. Now our children are no lomger learning under the trees. We will always remember his good work in South Africa.

We remember his Compassion, Sympathy, his kind hearted to help the poor people of South Africa.
To his family and friends we are mourning with you.
May his Soul rest in Peace.
